Cocina de Carlos
One of our favorite questions to get asked: What is Mezcal? Another distilled alcohol from the agave plant, it is similar to tequila in some ways and wildly different in others. Mezcal typically has a smokier, earthier flavor than tequila, but can also carry a wider variety of herbal and floral flavors depending on the agave used. The Oaxaca region in Mexico produces over 90% of the worlds mezcal supply. 

Usually drunk straight or done shot-style similar to it’s tequila cousin, it has a little different flavor and a different process as a result. Instead of lime, mezcal is accompanied with a slice of orange, and with a special type of salt, “sal de gusano”, made with crushed chili peppers and ground fried agave larvae for a truly unique and authentic Mexican flavor. Cocina de Carlos has over 20 bottles of imported mezcal on hand, from the light and floral, to the bold and smoky. Mix up your Cocina tradition and try something a little different next time you visit. And yes, we have the salt!

If you haven’t had one yet, our frozen mango Moscow mule, made with @ToledoSpirits Heart of Gold vodka and fresh ground ginger, is truly an instant classic. Sweet, spicy, refreshing all in one glass, it pairs well with nearly anything on the menu, though we especially suggest it alongside our Pineapple Don Charlie!

Try our almost famous Pineapple Don Charlie with sliced portabella mushrooms and avocado, cooked with our homemade corn salsa, for a fresh, flavorful and fully vegetarian-friendly option. Roasted in a fresh pineapple half for extra flavor and mild sweetness, this dish is still one of Carlos’ favorites!

What kind of low carb options do you have?

Not only is this the best place for Mexican food in town it has a great atmosphere, wonderful servers and the best Margaritas. I'm thinking lunch tomorrow... on the rocks, no salt please!
